South West Region records drop in crime rate

South West Region Police has witnessed a decline in criminal activity, with a 17% decrease in robbery cases and a 7% decrease in sexual offenses, according to the Regional Police Commissioner, Noel Kayira.

Addressing a bi-annual crime review meeting for the Regional Executive Committee in Blantyre, Kayira attributed the improvement to enhanced police visibility in high-crime areas and community sensitization efforts.

Between January and June, the region recorded 222 robbery cases, down from 256 during the same period last year. Similarly, sexual harassment cases dropped to 71, compared to 179 in the previous year.

Kayira said the reduction in crime is a testament to the effective strategies implemented by the police and the community, emphasizing the importance of continued joint action.
