Voting concludes in Karonga Bye-Elections

Voting has ended in the local by-elections held in three wards of Karonga District, namely Kaporo, Chilanga and Rukuru.

Chifundo Kachale, Chairperson of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), has told journalists at Mwenitete Nerve Centre that the voting process went on smoothly.

Looking ahead, Kachale emphasized the importance of community sensitisation to ensure that voters are informed about changes, such as the adjusted closing time for voting.

Some voters arrived at polling centres after the designated time of four o’clock in the afternoon and were unable to cast their votes due to the new electoral regulations.

Kachale urged residents of the three wards to maintain peace while the vote counting is underway.

21 candidates are competing for seats across the three wards, representing various political parties including MCP, AFORD, UTM, NDP, Umodzi, DPP, as well as independent candidates.
