Trade expert calls for investment in homegrown research

Regional trade experts have emphasised the need for Malawi to invest in homegrown research led solutions that speak to the country’s development challenges.

Trade Facilitation Expert at Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa, Shylet Nyabeze, said most trade data used on the African continent is not home grown.

Nyabeze’s call comes as Malawi and other countries in the region are planning and implementing strategies for smooth trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area.

Apart from data from the National Statistical Office and other arms under the Ministry of Finance, most economic research-based solutions used locally emanate from the World Bank, IMF, African Development Bank and other development partners through various projects.
