Pre-budget consultations underway

Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Honourable Simplex Chithyola Banda, has officially opened the 2025/26 Pre-budget Consultations at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

Chithyola Banda has urged stakeholders to shape a people-centred budget amidst economic challenges.

“This gathering demonstrates our shared mission to transform Malawi’s economy,” Chithyola Banda said, highlighting the consultations’ role in promoting economic stability and sustainable growth.

“Our core task today is to gather your views and contributions to develop a budget that meets the aspirations of our people,” added Chithyola Banda.

He acknowledged the persistent global and local economic hurdles, including inflation, climate change, and geopolitical tensions, but stressed the need for collaboration.

“Given the current economic climate, it is critical to identify key areas to focus on for resilience and growth,” he said.

The Minister also emphasised fiscal discipline, noting that the government would rely on locally generated revenue instead of excessive borrowing.

“We are committed to using the available resources responsibly while working to secure support from international partners,” said the minister.
