Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) Independent and Impartial Elections Committee has disqualified former General Secretary Carol Bapu from contesting for the presidency in the forthcoming elections slated for 23 August 2025 in Lilongwe.
A list of vetted executive committee nominees, signed by the Elections Committee Chairperson Zione Ntaba, indicates that Bapu is ineligible as she has already served two consecutive terms in the NAM executive committee, a violation of the association’s constitutional provisions.
Despite securing 16 nominations from NAM affiliates more than incumbent president, Vitumbiko Gubuduza, who has 9, Bapu will not appear on the ballot.
Bapu said she is still reviewing the committee’s decision.
Her disqualification comes just days after a group of 80 concerned netball stakeholders petitioned the Malawi National Council of Sports over her candidature.
The petition cited alleged financial mismanagement, loss of sponsor trust, and constitutional breaches during her previous tenure in the NAM executive.
