Malawi, Tanzania to implement Songwe River Development Programme

Efforts are underway to implement a four-year joint Songwe River Basin Development Programme between Malawi and Tanzania aimed at sustaining water resources and promoting economic development for the two countries along the Songwe River basin.

With Malawians travelling to Kiera and Tunduma in Mbeya Province,  Songwe region, to procure goods for local markets, the intiative is expected to boost trade.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera delegated Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima to attend the celebrations at the onvitation of Tanzanian President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Malawian High Commissioner to Tanzania Andrew Zumbe Kumwenda hailed Tanzania’s swift assistance during Cyclone Freddy.

“Their assistance last year still lingers in the hearts of many Malawians. They are friends in good and bad times,” he said.
