African Development Bank (AfDB) has provided Malawi with $1 million (approximately K1.73 billion) in response to a call by President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika for support towards the country’s humanitarian emergency response during the 2025/26 lean season.
The Malawi Government, through the Ministry of Finance, and the AfDB have since signed a financing agreement aimed at supporting families affected by climate-related shocks across the country.
AfDB Country Manager, Macmillan Anyanwu, observed that over the years, Malawi has been severely affected by climate-related shocks, with responses placing significant demands not only on the government but also on development partners, who have consistently rallied behind Malawi to mitigate the impacts of these shocks.
He said the Bank will continue supporting and working closely with the Malawi Government to ensure that effective mitigation and adaptation measures are implemented.
Meanwhile, Minister of Finance Joseph Mwanamvekha thanked the AfDB for being Malawi’s true and trusted partner, assuring that the funds will be used for their intended purpose and will reach the targeted beneficiaries.
According to the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Report, over four million people will require food assistance during the 2025–2026 lean season, which runs from October 2025 to March 2026.
