Farmers in Kambewa Village, Traditional Authority M’bwatalika in Lilongwe are reaping the benefits of sustainable agriculture courtesy of a partnership between Moyo Ngwathu Organisation and the Ministry of Agriculture through the Lilongwe District Agriculture Office.
During a field demonstration, farmers showcased how the use of organic manure and treadle pump irrigation is significantly boosting crop yields, while reducing reliance on costly chemical fertilisers.
Agricultural Officer at the Lilongwe District Agriculture Office, Joseph Mtengezo, commended the progress being made.
“There is a huge improvement in productivity. I encourage more farmers to work in cooperatives to benefit from such impactful initiatives,” he said.
As part of the initiative:
60 lead farmers have received maize seed and organic fertiliser;
Several others have been provided with treadle pumps to enhance irrigation;
Beneficiary farmers have committed to donate part of their maize harvest to the elderly and other vulnerable groups in their communities.
One of the beneficiaries, Yokoniya Chikadza, expressed appreciation for the new tools.

“We used to irrigate using watering cans. It was tiring. Now, with treadle pumps, farming is easier and more productive,” said Chikadza.
In his remarks, Chief Executive Officer of Moyo Ngwathu Organisation, Ringo Kanshulu, said the project is not only improving yields but also changing farmers’ mindset.
“It’s encouraging to see a shift in thinking. Farmers now understand that even with organic manure, they can achieve yields comparable to those who use chemical fertilisers,” said Kanshulu.

Beneficiaries say the collaboration is enhancing food security, strengthening local communities, and laying a foundation for a more resilient, sustainable agricultural future.
