Government has pledged continued support to the creative industry for it to effectively contribute to the country’s development.
Deputy Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Owen Chomanika made the remarks in Lilongwe during the opening ceremony of the 2023 Malawi Film Festival.
Chomanika said the time has come for the country to embrace the creative industry as laid out in the country’s aspirations, Malawi 2063 which seeks to turn the country into a wealthy and self-reliant industrialised middle-income country.
“For a long time, Malawi has been depending on films from other countries and this platform will help us embrace and keep our culture. As such we need to support and bring awareness of the value the creative industry has.” Said Chomanika.
On his part, Vice President of the Film Association of Malawi, Ashukire Mwakisulu, expressed gratitude for government intervention to boost the creative industry in the country.
The film festival was held under the theme: ‘Unveiling the untold stories from our motherland.’
