‘Farm mechanisation key to competing on the international market’

Controller of Agriculture and Extension Services in the Ministry of Agriculture Dr. Alfred Mwenifumbo has advised farmers to adopt farm mechanisation inorder to produce products that will compete on the international market.

Mwenifumbo said this Tuesday at Hara Irrigation Scheme where Mahindra, a company that deals in farm equipment had organised a demonstration of rice planting using Mahindra Rice Transplanters.

“Malawian rice farmers produce 146 thousand metric tonnes per year but there is a demand for 12 million tonnes of rice in Africa. Adopting the use of machines when farming will not only help farmers increase their yield but it will also ease their work,” Mwenifumbo said.
