Ex-con rescued from mob amid swindling allegations

Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody an ex-convict who nearly became a victim of mob justice following allegations that she swindled over 200 people in Mchinji and Lilongwe respectively.

Spokesperson for Lilongwe Police Station, Hastings Chigalu, has identified the suspect as Maggie Nyirenda and she was allegedly telling people that she runs a disability organisation which pays school fees for needy students at Maranatha Academy (Lilongwe campus) with the aid of foreign donors.

After it was discovered that she was a trickster, the victims stormed a guest house she was lodging at in Area 36 in Lilongwe but the Police quickly rescued her before she could be harmed.

Nyirenda will appear in court soon to answer a case of Obtaining Money by False Pretense.

She had previously been arrested for committing similar offences and served a year-long jail sentence at Mzuzu Prison.
