Movement for Environmental Action (MEA) has called for intensified reforestation efforts, warning that deforestation continues to fuel climate change.
Speaking at a tree-planting exercise at Kamuzu Barracks Community Day Secondary School, MEA Legal Advisor, Titani Chalira emphasised the importance of collective action.
“To combat climate change, we must all take tree planting seriously. Trees help restore ecosystems, provide energy, and mitigate deforestation,” he said.
The school’s headteacher, Major David Kacholola, requested for more tree seedlings from well wishers.
“With 4,000 students, we need each one to plant a tree. This area once had dense tree cover, but now it’s farmland. We must reverse this,” said Major Kacholola.
MEA has planted over 5,000 trees this season and aims for 10,000. It is urging schools, communities, and organisations to prioritise reforestation as a way of conserving the environment.
