Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) has urged the government, through the Chikwawa Irrigation Department, to provide additional pipes in areas where they are needed to ensure that water reaches longer distances.
EAM Deputy General Secretary Bishop Grey Malabu said this as his organisation handed over the rehabilitated Tithandizane-Mulongosola Irrigation Scheme to Traditional Authority Chiputula in Chikwawa District.
The association completed this project with financial assistance from Iceland Church Aid.
The Tithandizane-Mulongosola Irrigation Scheme covers 15 hectares and has 150 members.
Traditional Authority Chiputula thanked EAM for the work, saying the scheme will ensure food security in his area as the country is grappling with food insecurity.
“As a Chief, I would like to urge my subjects to care for this development as it will not only bring food, but it has also helped the area to be developed in terms of economic activities,” he added.
Council Chairperson for Chikwawa District, Alexander Shawa, thanked EAM for implementing different related projects.
The rehabilitation works, which included the construction of an intake and putting in pipes, among other things, cost K90 million.
