Blessings Chalemera, a third-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration at the University of Malawi (UNIMA), is seeking support for air tickets and accommodation to travel for medical treatment in India after being diagnosed with scoliosis through radiographic examination.
According to his family, government has already committed to meeting medical fees only.
According to documents we have seen, Dr. Davis Buxton Mpando, Specialist Neurosurgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, said they cannot carry out Blessings’ surgery due to a lack of resources.
The neurosurgeon added that Blessings, 20 years of age, is presented with a long history of spine deformity and general body pains and weakness.
“He needs Scoliosis surgery to reduce his spine deformity. I therefore recommend that he be allowed to be referred outside the country for right and proper treatment,” Dr Mpando said in a medical report for the patient.
Lloyd Chalemera, father of Blessings, confirmed in an interview with MBC Digital that the government has committed to covering the medical treatment costs only.
“However, the family still needs support to cover the cost of air tickets and accommodation during the period of treatment. The total amount required for air tickets is K 8,000,000,” Chalemera said.
Registrar for Academics at UNIMA, Tony Kanyumbu, said any assistance rendered to him will be highly appreciated.
