Voters urged to verify names ahead of By-Elections

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has urged eligible voters in Blantyre West to verify their names in the voters register ahead of the forthcoming by-election scheduled for 17 March 2026.

The verification exercise is taking place from 17 to 18 February at designated centres within the constituency. MEC Commissioner, Emmanuel Fabiano, made the call at Andiseni Primary School during a supervision visit to monitor the progress of the exercise.

Dr. Fabiano stressed that voter verification is a critical step in safeguarding the credibility of the electoral process. He encouraged all registered voters to check their details within the stipulated period to avoid being turned away on the polling day.

The by-election in Blantyre West follows the death of Michael Izeki Chisala, who was among the contestants in the 16 September 2025 general elections. His passing necessitated the fresh poll in accordance with electoral laws.

During the monitoring exercise, it was observed that there were no political party monitors present at the centre that was visited. However, MEC has emphasized the need for all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and community leaders, to actively participate and collaborate to ensure a transparent and peaceful electoral process.

The Commission has assured voters that all necessary measures are being put in place to guarantee a smooth, free, and fair by-election.
