Mangochi First Grade Magistrates Court has convicted and sentenced six men to two years in prison for contravening the Forestry Act.
In May this year, the convicts were found in Phirilongwe Forest Reserve with tools used for cutting down trees and producing charcoal without a permit, which contravenes Sections 32, 33, and 65 of the National Parks and Wildlife Act, as well as Section 68 of the Forestry Act.
In court, they all pleaded guilty and First Grade Magistrate, Roy Kakutu sentenced the six to two years imprisonment with hard labour to protect forest reserves in the district.
