Churches Action in Relief and Development (CARD) is optimistic that improving the quality of fish feed may increase fish production and subsequently the country’s export basket.
CARD officials said this during a tour of Nthimbule Fish Club under Traditional Authority Kapondo in Mchinji District.
Project Assistant at CARD, Jonathan Mateketa, told MBC Digital that Nthimbule Fish Club, which produces five tons of fish annually, has the potential to produce 50 tons if the club intensifies the use of quality fish feed.
The clubs’ annual produce of 5 tons per year represents 10% of its potential.
Malawi is failing to meet its annual fish requirement of 100,000 metric tons of fish and imports fish feed as well as fish from its neighboring countries Zambia and Mozambique.
