Police warns against ID selling and buying

Police at Lumbadzi in Dowa have warned against the illegal sale or purchase of National Identity Cards.

Lumbadzi Police Station’s Francis Kakhobwe of Community Policing Branch said this in response to a surge in individuals claiming to have lost their IDs and seeking police reports for replacement.

Kakhobwe described the tendency of buying and selling IDs as a serious offence punishable by the laws of the land.

“Be aware that thieves can use personal information on the IDs to open fraudulent bank accounts, obtain loans and make unauthorized transactions.

“National IDs theft can also lead to financial losses, criminal charges and bring about emotional and psychological damages,” Kakhobwe said.

He has called for prompt reporting for lost or stolen IDs to Police.
