MW TO EXPERIENCE NORMAL TO BELOW NORMAL RAINFALL IN 2023/24 RAINFALL SEASON

The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services says global models are projecting Elnino conditions during the 2023/24 rainfall season.

Elnino is characterized by unusual warming of waters in the Eastern Central Equatorial Pacific Ocean which leads to drier conditions over Southern Africa including Southern Malawi.

According to the Director of the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, Lucy Mtilatila, the country should anticipate normal to below normal rainfall amounts over most parts of the country in the 2023/2024 rainfall season.

Malawi experienced Elnino conditions in 1982/1983, 1997/1998, 2009/2010 and 2015/2016 rainfall seasons.
