Parliamentary Committee on Social and Community Affairs has commended President Dr Lazarus Chakwera’s administration for empowering the youth through the commercial agriculture sector which is crucial in fostering economic development.
Chairperson for the committee, Savel Kafwafwa, made these remarks when the National Youth Council of Malawi (NYCOM) presented a K6 million to Wamaka Youth Farmers Cooperative at Msongwe in Mzuzu.
Kafwafwa stressed the importance of the government’s support in promoting economic recovery.
He noted that such initiatives will help many youths to achieve financial independence.
Executive Director for NYCOM, Rex Chapota, urged the young farmers to effectively use the funds for increased fish production.
Executive Director for Wamaka Youth Farmers Cooperative, Francis Chirambo, expressed gratitude for the grant and stressed the importance of value addition in creating jobs for the youth and promoting better health outcomes.
Wamaka Youth Farmers Cooperative operates seven fish ponds, producing 3.4 metric tons of fish annually.
