Malawi records 1,700 suicide-related deaths

Over 1,700 people have committed suicide in the country between 2019 and this year, according to the Ministry of Health.

This has raised concerns about the mental health status of the population and authorities say some of those who died experienced mental health difficulties due to work-related stress.

This was disclosed ahead of World Mental Health Day’s commemoration on 10th October, 2024.

Deputy Minister of Health, Halima Daudi, has since urged Institutions and organisations in the country to prioritise issues of Mental Health in their workplaces.

World Health Organisation Country Representative, Neema Kimambo, also emphasised the importance of governments, employers and other stakeholders in supporting workers with mental health conditions to participate and thrive in work.
