LCC launch tree-planting exercise

Deputy Mayor of Lilongwe City Council (LCC), Ruth Chingwalu, has described the tree-planting exercise by the council as a milestone towards conserving the environment in Malawi.

Chingwalu made the remarks during the launch of the 2024/2025 tree-planting season for Lilongwe city on Friday.

She emphasised the need for all stakeholders to work together in protecting and planting more trees during the rainy season to conserve the environment as stipulated in the Malawi 2063 development agenda.

Chief Executive Officer for LCC, McCloud Kadammanja, said cyclones, floods and famine are a result of climate change mostly due to the lack of conservating the environment.

Kadammanja urged the citizens to take responsibility for their environment and plant trees to combat climate change.

LCC collaborated with the Botanic Gardens to procure trees which were planted during the launch.

The tree-planting season is observed as a means of promoting environmental conservation to counter issues of climate change. The main tree planting season launch was held in Chitipa on 17 December 2024.
