Govt to demolish illegal structures

Ministry of Lands has announced plans of a demolition campaign targeting illegal structures in Malawi’s urban areas, with a view of upholding strict compliance to urban structure plans.

Devie Chilonga, Secretary for Lands, disclosed this in Salima at a meeting for registered Physical Planners on streamlining physical planning activities in line with the Physical Planning Act of 2016.

“I am encouraging Malawians, particularly in cities to develop where they have permission. It may take years after being issued with a warning notice, but when we are ready, the law will take its cause,” said Chilonga.

Gilbert Chilinde, President of the Malawi Institute of Physical Planners, acknowledged the ineffective implementation of national structure plans, attributing it to the lack of enforcement by local councils.

The meeting also looked into modalities of revising the 1987 National Physical Development Plan to align it with the Malawi 2063 agenda.
