Four people have died while several others have sustained injuries in a road accident at Lwanjati along Champhira-Luwerezi gravel road in Mzimba District.
The accident involved a motor vehicle, a Hino Ranger with registration number BAX3020, driven by Robert Phiri. The vehicle was transporting 74 Catholic Church members from Mwase in Zambia to Chizani in Mzimba for a church ceremony.
According to Macfarlen Mseteka, the Public Relations Officer for Jenda Police, the driver failed to navigate a corner as he was driving down a hill at Langwati, losing control of the vehicle.
“Three people lost their lives at the scene and one died upon arrival at Jenda Rural Hospital, while 34 passengers have been treated as outpatients at the facility,” he said.
Mseteka added, “Several others including the driver have been referred to Mzimba District Hospital as they are seriously injured.”
