Farmers benefit from financial inclusion project

Over 180,000 smallholder farmers in twelve districts have been equiped with new farming technologies, courtesy of a project by Opportunity International Malawi called ‘strengthening system for financial inclusion in rural Malawi’.

Country Director of the organization, Richard Chongo, confirmed in Mulanje during a celebration of the achievements of the project, which is expected to wind up this year.

One of the beneficiaries, Beatrice Kholowa of Traditional Authority Mabuka in Mulanje District, said she is now harvesting bumper yield.

“You see, with the new farming technologies my family is no longer facing hunger bacause with the skills we acquired from Opportunity International Malawi, things have changed for better,” Kholowa said.

Secretary for Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare, Nertha Mgala, hailed Opportunity International Malawi for enhancing financial inclusion among the marginalized, especially in rural areas.

Some of the districts where the project was being implemented are Nkhotakota, Mulanje, Zomba and Machinga.
