Ekwendeni registering high HIV infections

Ekwendeni in Mzimba North is said to be one of the hotspots for new HIV infections in Mzimba District.

This came out when Right to Care, a non- Governmental Organisation which supports various health facilities in Mzimba North in HIV prevention, organised an open day as one way of raising awareness in the area on the importance of HIV testing and adherence to treatmemt once found HIV positive.

The open day began with a big walk.

Precious Robson, the organisation’s Chief of Party, said men, the youth and children are among the groups registering new infections.

“Our target is to ensure that no new HIV infections are registered and those on treatment should not default,” said Robson.

Robson- Malawi should be HIV free by 2030

She further called on people to go for testing for various diseases including cervical cancer, tuberculosis and hypertension.

Mzimba North has a total of 29,798 people on Anti Retro Viral Treatment and 3.5 percent of people who go for HIV testing are found positive.
