Mzuzu City Council says cultural festivals are crucial in the promotion of tourism and economic growth.
The Council’s Chief Executive Officer, Gomezgani Nyasulu, made this statement when Africa Growth Group Limited (AGGL)presented a K1million cheque to Lubinga Centenary Celebration Committee.
The funds are for the memorial festival honouring the late Group Village Headman Lubinga Nkhoswayo Singini, who passed away in 1924.
“As a city, this is a great opportunity to boost tourism as this is in line with the government’s three key elements of Agriculture, Tourism and Mining ATM as highlighted in the Malawi 2063,” Nyasulu said.
AGGL Communications Manager, Amos Chibwana, said they made the donation in response to Chief Lubinga’s call for support.
Organising Secretary for the Lubinga Centenary Celebrations Committee, Senior Group Village Headman Bob Mkandawire, said the contribution will take them closer to their budget target of K3.5 million.
