Officials at Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme (CS-EPWP) believe they have fostered a safer learning environment for young children after improving sanitation facilities in community-based childcare centres (CBCCs) in Rumphi District.
CS-EPWP Supervisor for Chimyanga Catchment area, James Mkandawire, highlighted the impact of the community contribution component that involves community members working for 10 days on projects that benefit their communities without pay.
A caregiver at Mbulunji CBCC, Dorothy Chiwaka, noted that rehabilitated facilities have transformed hygiene standards and created a conducive learning space for her learners.
Participants in the CS-EPWP engage in activities such as constructing swales, creating contour marker ridges, preserving forests and planting vetiver grass to restore degraded land which are paid works under the programme.
