EMPOWERING ARTISTS IN ANTI-PIRACY DRIVE

Newwave, a music and publishing company, is gearing up to launch the ‘Ntchito za Manja Anga’ Project, aimed at safeguarding artists in Malawi by addressing the persistent issue of piracy.

Mercy Diniwa, the Public Relations Officer for Newwave, emphasised the significant challenge that piracy poses for artists in Malawi.

“As music distributors and publishers, we are dedicated to safeguarding artists’ creations by raising awareness about the detrimental effects of piracy,” said Diniwa.

“Our focus is on promoting ethical consumption of music through legal streaming services and traditional broadcasting media,” she added.

Scheduled to kick off on 24 February, the project will commence with a series of workshops across the country’s major cities, starting in Mzuzu. Diniwa urged all content creators, including producers, musicians, and managers, to actively participate and expand their understanding of copyright management.

Selected as a successful recipient of the COSOMA Copyright Fund Grant, the project not only aims to combat piracy but also strives to assist artists in diversifying their revenue streams. By doing so, “We seek to strengthen the entertainment industry in Malawi and contribute to its overall growth,” said Diniwa.
