Chikwawa eye specialist wins international humanitarian award

By Leah Malimbasa, MANA

An ophthalmic clinical officer at Chikwawa District Hospital Rex Bwanausi, has been honoured with the One World One Family Humanitarian Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to eye health services in southern Malawi.

In an interview, Bwanausi described the award as a collective achievement.

“This is a great recognition and I would not have achieved it without the help of my colleagues at the department and the support of the Chikwawa Director of Health Services, Dr Grace Momba,” he said.

Bwanausi has worked at Chikwawa District Hospital since 2006 and joined the ophthalmology department after upgrading his qualifications in 2015. “Apart from working here, I have also operated on cataract patients in Nsanje,” he added.

Speaking to MANA, One World One Family Executive Director for Malawi, Dalitso Mlonya, said Bwanausi was recognised during the One World One Family World Cultural Festival for his selfless service to vulnerable communities.

“For many years, Bwanausi has served as an Ophthalmic Clinical Officer in Chikwawa, where trachoma and cataracts are the leading causes of blindness. With limited resources and immense determination, he travels long distances, often at his own expense, to bring sight-saving care to remote villages,” said Mlonya.

He added that through a partnership with Sightsavers, Bwanausi has helped restore vision to hundreds of people across southern Malawi.

Its Humanitarian Award is presented to individuals who demonstrate exceptional commitment to improving lives, particularly among underserved communities.
