World Food Programme has urged different stakeholders in the country to implement policies that incorporate insurance as a risk transfer mechanism for vulnerable Malawians.
WFP Country Director, Simon Denhere, made the remarks during a stakeholder consultation workshop in Lilongwe on mainstreaming crop insurance in government programmes.
According to Denhere, crop insurance is a risk mitigation measure against climate change.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Yusuf Mkungula, said crop insurance plays a crucial role in safeguarding farmers’ livelihoods and ensuring they remain secure in terms of income and nutrition.
The Ministry of Agriculture is providing access to micro-insurance services through the “Adapting to climate change through Integrated Risk Management Strategies and Enhanced Market Opportunities for Resilient Food Security and Livelihoods” Project.
