Likoma District Commissioner Abubakar Nkhoma says the sports and creative arts allocation under the Reformed Constituency Development Fund (CDF) has potential to improve sports and nurture talent.
Nkhoma said this on Tuesday when Likoma District Council briefed the Constituency Development Committee (CDC) on standard operating procedures for the sports and creative arts allocation under the Reformed CDF.
He said Likoma had previously produced athletes in swimming and other disciplines through the Malawi Schools Sports Association (MASSA), with some representing the district and country at national and international competitions.
CDF Sports and Creative Arts Desk Officer, Antonio Manda, said the allocation would provide opportunities for different sporting and creative disciplines that have struggled to develop because of limited resources.
CDC Chairperson Harrison Chimwaza commended the council for orienting them on the fund.
Chimwaza said the exercise demonstrated commitment to transparency and helped stakeholders understand how the allocation would benefit communities.
The Reformed CDF has an allocation of K30 million for sports development and K20 million for creative arts in Likoma District.
