President Chakwera opens Mining Investment Forum with call for transparency

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera, says the 2025 Malawi Mining Investment Forum is a milestone in Malawi’s efforts to achieve economic growth and sustainability.

President Chakwera made the remarks in Lilongwe when officially opening the 2nd Malawi Mining Investment Forum (MMIF), noting that Malawi possesses vital minerals that are in high demand across the globe.

He said his government has put in place a functional system to address malpractices in the mining industry, pledging to monitor activities in the sector closely. Dr Chakwera added that beneath Malawi’s soils lie precious minerals capable of driving technological and other innovative advancements.

The President further noted that the mining sector plays a crucial role in the achievement of Malawi 2063 aspirations, emphasizing the need for strong regulatory measures in the industry. He said it is for this reason that his administration has established the Malawi Mining Authority to ensure proper oversight. Dr Chakwera also called for transparency in all mining dealings, pledging to make the sector robust and beneficial to all Malawians.

In his remarks, president of the Malawi Chamber of Mines and Energy, Maxwell Kazako, said the chamber is committed to strengthening the mining sector by improving its frameworks and working with stakeholders to ensure adherence to proper laws and regulations.

Minister of Mining, Kenneth Zikhale Ngoma, called for collaboration among all players to deal with malpractices in the mining industry.

The forum has attracted international delegations, development partners, government representatives, industry leaders, civil society organisations, academia, and policy makers.

It is being held under the theme: “Advancing Malawi’s Mining Agenda in an Evolving Global Industry” .
