Government re- commits to improve water supply

The government is committed to ensuring that Malawians have access to clean and portable water, Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation, Liana Kakhobwe Chapota, has confirmed.

Kakhobwe remarked this on Friday after touring Northern Region Waterboard water intake in Rumphi to appreciate the water situation in the district.

“Water is a crosscutting issue that affects hygiene and so many other issues and the government is working hard to ensure people have access to clean water,” Kakhobwe said.

Northern Region Waterboard Public Relations Manager, Edward Nyirenda said currently the district is facing water supply challenges due to increased demand.

He said the U$36 million (K61 billion) African Development Bank and Malawi Government funded Rumphi Water and Sanitation Services Improvement Project is expected to address such challenges once completed by the year 2027.

The project is expected to supply water to at least 158,000 people by 2040 in Rumphi and parts of Mzimba District in line with Malawi 2063.

African Development Bank funding the project with a grant of US33 million about K58 billion while the Government of Malawi will contribute at least US3 million ( K5 billion) to the project.
