Fisheries sector to improve revenue collection in Likoma – Government

The Director of Human Resources and Administration for Likoma District Council, Yohane Bilesi, says the fisheries sector will enhance revenue collection once devolved in the district.

Bilesi made the remarks on Monday during an awareness workshop on devolved fisheries sector functions for Likoma District Executive Committee Members (DEC).

“This workshop is very important to Likoma District Council because when we talk of decentralisation, we also talk of devolution. This gives us the power to control our resources in terms of activities and fisheries is the core business of Likoma,” said Bilesi.

He thanked the Ministry of Natural Resources and Climate Change for the initiative to devolve the sector, noting that the council will now have the authority to maximise the potential of the department.

The workshop was conducted with funding from a USAID supported project known as Restoring Fisheries for Sustainable Livelihoods in Lake Malawi (REFRESH).
