Malawian-born, USA-based Scorchers prospect Chioma Okafor has opted to represent Nigeria at international level not Malawi.
According to a statement from the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), the decision follows discussions held with Okafor’s parents on 18th June.
Born in Malawi to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother, Okafor has never featured for Malawi at any level.
The University of Connecticut striker was previously called up for the Scorchers international friendlies against Zambia in February but was unavailable due to academic commitments.
FAM confirmed that they have since received official communication from the Nigeria Football Federation, confirming Okafor’s decision to represent the West African nation.
Part of FAM’s statement reads: “FAM engaged the parents and the player, who have confirmed her intention and commitment to represent Nigeria.”
