President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has arrived at the construction site of Kholongo Multipurpose Dam in the area of T/A Chakhadza in Dowa District.
The government is constructing the dam to the tune of K76.2 billion to end water problems and improve hygiene for communities of Mponela, Madisi and other surrounding areas.
The project was specifically identified to support growth of Mponela from a township to secondary city.
Kholongo Dam will be 23 metres high, with the capacity to store 25 billion litres of water.
Apart from domestic and industrial consumption, Kholongo Dam will also supply water for irrigation.
Upon completion, it is expected to benefit over 224 thousand people.
Meanwhile, Dr Chakwera has laid a foundation stone at the site to mark the official launch.
