CFTC warns against product tying on sugar sales

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission(CFTC) has issued a stern warning to some traders who are forcing customers to purchase sugar together with other commodities (product tying).

The Commission is also investigating five chain stores for various offences that relate to the sale of sugar such as hoarding, charging higher prices for sugar while issuing lower-valued receipts and overpricing.

The commission notes with concern the conduct by the retailers to force consumers to get other products if they are to buy the sugar.

Speaking to MBC, spokesperson for the commission, Innocent Helema, described this as unreasonable and unconscionable.

Helema further denounced the act by some retailers to put limits on sugar purchases per customer.
