A young Malawian professional, Alexander Matambo, has won a national leadership award in the United Kingdom in recognition of his contribution to the technology and financial sectors.
Matambo was named Future Leader at the 2026 Ethnicity Awards in London, which recognise outstanding contributions to inclusion, opportunity and leadership in Britain.
Matambo attended Kamuzu Academy in Malawi before moving to South Africa, where he graduated from Rhodes University with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance and a postgraduate diploma in Media Management, achieving distinction in the latter.
In 2020, he received the Chancellor’s International Business Scholarship to study at the University of Sussex, where he completed a master’s degree in International Marketing with distinction.
He began his career in London in media and marketing before moving into management consulting. In 2023, he joined Bloomberg, where he now works as an Enterprise Account Manager, managing relationships with major institutional financial firms.
He also serves as EMEA External Engagement Lead for Bloomberg Black in Tech and is a founding member of Black in Tech UK, a coalition connecting Black employee networks across major technology companies.
The Ethnicity Awards judges recognised his work in building professional networks, contributing to ITV News, developing a free career opportunities tool and supporting education and professional development for young people aged 16 to 24.
Earlier in 2026, he ranked third on the EMpower Future Leaders Role Model List, became a finalist for Financial Services Employee of the Year at the Black Talent Awards and was selected for the inaugural EMERGE 100, recognising 100 Black professionals in the UK.
Reflecting on his journey, Matambo said he had often found himself as the only person of his background in professional settings.
“Talent is evenly distributed, opportunity is not, and I want to be part of the change to show what’s possible,” he said.
“If this shows one student in Malawi that it is possible, it has done its job.”
From his early education in Malawi to leadership roles in Britain’s financial technology sector, Matambo’s journey reflects the growing international presence of Malawian professionals.
He hopes his achievements will inspire young people back home to pursue opportunities beyond their borders and demonstrate that their backgrounds need not limit their ambitions.
