WHO DONATES ESSENTIAL DRUGS TO MALAWI

World Health Organisation (WHO)  has reiterated its commitment to continue assisting the government of Malawi through the provision of medical supplies and technical support.

WHO representative in Malawi  Dr Neema Kimambo was speaking in Lilongwe during the official symbolic handover of the medical supplies to the Government of Malawi.

“As WHO we are committed to continuing assisting Malawi in various areas including case management,” said Kimambo.

Kimambo said WHO is committed to continuing to assist the government in quality health service delivery.

She said following the request by the government of  Malawi on the provision of anaesthetic medicine supply the organisation decided to respond quickly looking at its urgency.

The medicines assist to lessen the pain of patients going to the theatre.

“We will continue helping the government of Malawi by providing essential drugs as well as in case management,” Kimambo said.

Principal secretary in the Ministry of Health,  Dr Charles Mwansambo, said the donation has come at the right time when Malawi is in great need of such medicines in its theatres. He said  Covid 19 and other natural disasters disrupted the flow of medical supplies in Malawi including anaesthetic drugs.

He said some operations had to be suspended due to the lack of the medicines donated.

“This donation will go a long way in saving lives across the country. Our district hospitals were heavily affected at times we failed to conduct operations due to lack of these drugs,” Mwansambo said.

Mwansambo also urged various organisations to emulate the gesture shown by WHO.

The lack of essential medical supplies in Malawi late last year attracted a lot of attention from the public.

The donation is worth K56 million and has already been distributed.
