A social runners group from Lilongwe, Joggers On the Move (JOM), has unveiled its 2024 Marathon For a Purpose, with the aim of raising funds for Matekenya Health Centre in Dowa.
Publicity Secretary for the grouping, Joab Frank Chakhaza, says the 2024 edition will be held in Dowa on 3 August 2024;where the joggers will race in distances ranging from 5 to 42.2 Kilometres, aside from aerobics and cycling.
Chakhaza adds that the funds realised will be channeled towards installation of solar system at the health centre, which has been operating without electricity despite serving a community of more than 23,000 people.
Chakhaza has therefore appealed to the public, especially corporate entities, to join the marathon or donate for the success of the initiative, with a target of K20 million.
Nursing and Midwifery Officer for Matekenya Health Centre, Beatrice Moyo, says the anticipated installation of solar power would see the facility offering maternity delivery services and ease the burden on expectant mothers, who have been traveling more than 23 Kilometres to Dowa District Hospital for the service.
