JICA hands over Lilongwe Old Town Sub-Station

The Japanese International Corporation Agency (JICA) has officially handed over the Lilongwe Old Town sub-station to the Malawi Government through the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) Limited.

JICA undertook rehabilitation and upgrading of power infrastructure at both Kanengo and Old Town sub-stations in Lilongwe, contributing to the improvement of power supply in the country.

Chief Executive Officer of ESCOM, Kamkwamba Kumwenda, expressed gratitude for the development, noting that over 20,000 additional customers would benefit from the enhanced power infrastructure.

During the handover, JICA’s President, Akihiko Tanaka, emphasized the critical role of power infrastructure to the country’s development.

Minister of Agriculture, Sam Kawale, received the upgraded substation on behalf of the Malawi Government.

Kawale said the improved sub-stations mark a milestone in promoting economic development, ensuring a more stable and reliable electricity supply with minimal disruptions.
