Ministry of Sports and Youth has stressed the need for collaboration and investments towards developing netball and other sporting disciplines in Malawi.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry, Chikumbutso Mtumodzi, said this during the launch of this year’s Salima Sugar National Netball League in Lilongwe.
Mtumodzi hailed Salima Sugar Company Limited for hiking the sponsorship from K40 million to K80 million, saying the development will enrich the competitiveness of the league.
Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) General Secretary Yamikani Kauma said 120 have already registered and that more teams are willing to compete for honours in the national league.
NAM has maintained the format of the league which starts from the district level, then regional all the way to the national stage.
“It’s our hope that at the end of this league, we’ll have the players that we need to beef up the national under-21 and the senior team,” said Kauma, while indicating that K60 million will go towards the prizes.
Company Secretary of Salima Sugar Limited Charles Thupi said “we want each and every team to benefit from the sponsorship, and also the teams should get at least enough for their sweat”.
