Gangata seals parliamentary seat

By Smart Chalika

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has declared Alfred Gangata of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) as the duly elected Member of Parliament for the Mtandile–Mtsiriza Constituency.

MEC Chairperson, Justice Annabel Mtalimanja, made the announcement on Thursday at the Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe.

This follows a High Court ruling delivered on 10 November 2025, which ordered MEC to declare the winner, stating that the Commission did not have sufficient evidence to prove that the election’s void votes had affected the outcome.

According to official MEC results, Gangata secured 12,369 votes, narrowly beating Malawi Congress Party’s George Zulu, who amassed 12,360 votes.

Independent candidate Ruth Chingwalu came third with 1,610 votes, followed by UTM’s Elise Mituka with 1,313 votes, while Linda Phiri of AFORD finished with 97 votes.
