FARE Project to Strengthen Malawi’s food and nutrition security

By Wanangwa Mvalo

The Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development says the newly launched Food Accountability, Rights and Empowerment (FARE) Project will help address challenges affecting food and nutrition security in Malawi.

Speaking in Lilongwe during the official launch of the project implementation strategy, Rex Baluwa, representing the Secretary for Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, said the initiative will strengthen access to affordable and nutritious food through improved agricultural financing, production and value addition.

Baluwa said some Malawians continue to face challenges in achieving food security due to limited access to agricultural resources and climate related disasters, including cyclones and prolonged dry spells, which affect agricultural productivity.

He said the three year project, running until December 2027, will also strengthen accountability mechanisms, promote access to agricultural finance and enhance community participation in food security programmes.

Germany’s Acting Ambassador to Malawi, Andreas Hartmann, says the FARE Project will enhance food security by improving Malawians’ access to food while boosting agricultural production.

Meanwhile FAO Representative in Malawi, Ali Said Yesuf, said the organisation will provide technical support to facilitate the implementation of various agricultural policies aimed at improving the country’s agricultural production.

The FARE Project is being implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with funding from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
