The vaccines have been donated by the United Kingdom through the Covax Facility.
According to the Acting British High Commissioner, Charge d' Affaires Fiona Ritchie, the vaccines are part of her government's commitment made at the recent G7 Summit to have 100 million people across the world vaccinated by June 2022.
Receiving the consignment on Saturday, August 14, the Minister of Health, Khumbize Chiponda expressed hope that the batch will help those who got the first jab of Astrazeneca and were yet to receive the second jab after the 12 week waiting period.
This néw batch will be administered alongside another vaccine, Johnson and Johnson that is given out once to those that never took the other vaccine.
"We are happy that Malawians acknowledged the importance of vaccines and this batch will help us vaccinate more people", said Chiponda.
The vaccines will be delivered across the country in readiness for use by Monday next week.
Malawi has approved a variety of vaccines, including Pfizer, as part of efforts to contain the deadly disease that is killing about 22 people on average every day for the last couple of weeks.
