President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has commended the Cyclone Freddy Survivors for being resilient and bound to find solutions to alleviate their suffering.
Dr Chakwera added that through the Tigwirane Manja Operation government will ensure that the survivors get the necessary assistance.
The Malawi leader then said currently 189,159 are displaced and currently, and there are 437 camps across the affected districts.
President Chakwera made the remarks at Sanjika Palace in his address to the nation after visiting some affected areas in the Lower Shire. Dr Chakwera said the death toll stands at 360 and 282 people are missing.
“What I saw made me believe that by holding hands a lot can be achieved, I want to assure the survivors that the government through Tigwirane Manja Operation will ensure that they get the necessary assistance,” said Dr Chakwera.
Commenting on the assistance that the government has received, President Chakwera thanked different stakeholders, International Partners and UN agencies for the assistance saying it is timely, however, the Malawi leader appealed for more support.
“Let me thank the development partners, our neighbouring countries, different organisations, companies and individuals for the assistance that is timely, however, let me appeal for more donations since the devastation made a big impact and a lot of people are affected,” President Chakwera Added.
President Chakwera is expected to visit Zomba and Mangochi from 18 March.
