MALAWIAN BOXER DEFEATS NIGERIAN

Malawian boxer Byson Gwayan has defeated Nigerian boxer Hammed Olajide in a non-title bout held at M1 center point in Lilongwe. Olajide surrendered in the fifth round forcing the referee to end the bout in favour of Gwayani.

MEC TO CONSULT ON BY-ELECTIONS

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says it will consult electoral stakeholders on how parliamentary by-elections can be held in Dedza Central East and Nkhota-Kota North East Constituencies. Members of Parliament for the two constituencies died last month. The law stipulates that by-elections are held within 60 days from the time a parliamentary seat falls vacant. MEC Spokesperson, Sangwani Mwafulirwa says MEC will consult as to when the by-elections are held in the two constituencies since at the moment, COVID-19 preventive measures do not allow political gatherings.

State House Director of Communications Sean Kampondeni says President Dr Lazarus Chakwera is concerned about  reports that a loan authorization bill was tabled in Parliament during the just ended budget meeting without due approval of cabinet and other stakeholders. Kampondeni who is also Executive Assistant to the President was speaking during a State House Brief at the Kamuzu Palace  in Lilongwe.

‘A GIRL AND A BIKE’ CAMPAIGN

Creative Solutions for the Environment under the project “A Girl and a Bike” has provided 30 bicycles to girls at Matope Day Secondary school in Neno. The provision is aimed at easing the girls’ mobility when going to school. Speaking after presenting the donation, Creative Solutions Executive Director Taona Makunje Chigwenembe says due to inadequate secondary schools in Balaka and Neno districts, some girls are selected to schools that are 60 or more kilometers away, hence the donation.
