The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) says the voter verification exercise in Nkhata Bay Central Constituency has commenced on a good note.

One of the MEC Commissioners, Anthony Mukumbwa, said this after visiting several polling centres in the constituency as the commission is preparing to hold by-elections in some wards and constituencies in the country on 29th June 2021.

In Nkhata Bay Central Constituency for instance, MEC will hold a re-run following the nullification of the 21st May 2019 parliamentary election for the constituency, by the Supreme court of appeal.

Speaking at Chindozwa Polling Centre after monitoring the process in several centres in NkhataBay central constituency, Mukumbwa  said there is need for stakeholders like political parties to sensitize registered voters to go and verify their names.

“Though we are saying that the verification exercise has started well, stakeholders including political leaders must continue sensitizing the masses to enhance voters’ participation,” Mukumbwa explained.

“More over it will be to their advantage since elections are about numbers, the more they turn out, the higher their candidate of choice has chances of winning,” he added.

One of the eligible voters, Esther Mhone said she is aware of the importance of the exercise.

“We know that if we don’t verify our names we may not cast our vote when the day comes and this may affect our choice of who should represent us in parliament,” She said.

The voter verification exercise which will run for 14 days, has commenced on 26 May 2021.

During the 21st May 2019 elections, MEC announced that Symon Vuwa Kaunda of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) had won NkhataBay Central parliamentary seat, and Ralph Mhone of People's Party PP protested the results in court.
