Malawi’s First Lady Professor Gertrude Mutharika has warned Malawians that despite the country not having registered any Coronavirus case, “COVID-19 is pandemic and it should not be underrated.”

First Lady Mutharika: COVID-19 is a pandemic. First Lady Mutharika: COVID-19 is a pandemic.

She said this at Sanjika Palace on Thursday when she launched a prevention awareness campaign by Beautify Malawi (BEAM) Trust that “reports of thousands of people dying from the disease are scary.”

The First Lady said: “While we thank God that we have not yet registered a case, let’s continue to be vigilant in observing hygiene because prevention is better than cure. This is why we thought of coming in to work with our partners in fighting the pandemic.”

Mutharika, who is the Patron of BEAM Trust, said all Malawian’s neighboring countries have registered coronavirus which puts the country at high risk of the disease.

She spoke of the need to engage village committees’ healthy surveillance assistants as well as religious and traditional leaders to help in spreading correct messages and defuse myths surrounding the pandemic.

Local Government Minister Ben Phiri said in any disaster, preparedness was instrumental to contain the disease, adding that President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika’s declaration or the ‘State of Disaster’ was part of Malawi’s preparedness.

BEAM Trust donated buckets, soap, chlorine and other hygiene accessories to councils to help prevent the spread of the deadly disease which has claimed thousands of lives across the globe.

President Mutharika recently launched a K15 billion Response Plan to prevent the spread of the disease, which originated in China and washing hands with soap is one of the precautionary measures to prevent its spread.
